What Causes Acne?

  • Excess Sebum Production: Sebaceous glands attached to hair follicles produce sebum, a natural oil meant to lubricate the skin. However, overproduction of sebum can lead to blocked pores, causing acne..
  • Clogged Hair Follicles: Dead skin cells that don’t shed properly can accumulate in the hair follicles, mixing with sebum and clogging pores. This results in whiteheads, blackheads, or other forms of acne.
  • Bacterial Growth: The bacteria Propionibacterium acnes P. acnes lives on the skin naturally, but when trapped in clogged follicles, it multiplies, leading to inflammation, redness, and painful lesions.
